We were asked by Key 103 to comment on the £160 million announced this week for walking and cycling. The central message is that this isn't just about making things better for people who already cycle, but more significantly to create an environment where people who don't currently cycle (much) feel enabled to do so (more), and in the process to create a cleaner, healthier place to live that is fit for the 21st century and that we can be proud of. If anyone's wondering what Chris Boardman, GM Cycling and Walking Commissioner, has been up to recently: he's sending his team out to the ten Greater Manchester boroughs to establish an initial cycling and walking network plan. So far only two of these meetings have taken place (Tameside and Bury). Eight councils are still to participate. This is an account of what happened at the Bury meeting:
